Approximately one third of Dutch respondents to a 2018 survey indicated they store cryptocurrency on an online exchange. Most consumers, however, use their own storage. In the first three quarters of 2017, there were approximately 44,000 transactions in Bitcoin from the Netherlands on a trading platform called BTC Direct. Dutch interest in investing in cryptocurrencies decreased since 2018, however, with no new surveys or information appearing about this topic in the Netherlands in 2019.
Bitcoin is a so-called cryptocurrency, a digital currency that uses blockchain technology as a means of security. Because of its design, it is difficult to get an insight in the full size of the Bitcoin market in individual countries. Because Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies reached the news often in 2017, approximately 60 percent of the households in the Netherlands who invest in cryptocurrencies started doing so in 2017.
