Operating system share for smart TVs worldwide 2018

Android was the leading smart TV operating system worldwide in 2018. With a market share of approximately 40 percent, Google’s popular platform outperformed its closest competitor, Tizen, by roughly 17 percent.

In 2014, Google launched Android TV as a newly configurated version of its successful Android mobile operating system. The smart TV platform allows users to use and interact with streaming apps like Netflix, YouTube, or Amazon Prime, as well as connect their TVs to other devices such as smartphones or tablets. The OS comes pre-installed on smart TV brands such as Sony and Hisense.

Smart TVs are increasingly replacing traditional TV models

Worldwide sales of smart TVs reached 198.3 million units in 2018 – a figure that is estimated to climb to almost 250 million by 2024. As smart TVs and their operating systems have come a long way during the last decade, gradually turning into sophisticated and user-friendly streaming platforms, their market share has increased significantly over time. In 2018, an estimated 70 percent of all TVs sets sold worldwide that year were “smart”.
