Number of small medium-enterprises (SMEs) in Hungary 2023, by size

 In 2023, over 901,000 small and medium-sized enterprises operated in Hungary. The vast majority of these businesses employed only one person, while the second-largest group of enterprises had two to nine employees. At the same time, less than a thousand Hungarian SMEs employed 250 or more individuals.

Hungarian SMEs’ revenues

In 2023, small and medium-sized enterprises registered in Hungary generated nearly 183 trillion forints worth of revenues. Medium-sized companies with 250 or more employees were responsible for the highest share of it, totaling over 90 trillion forints. In comparison, small enterprises with no employees generated 1.13 trillion forints in revenues in the same year.

Startup activity in Hungary

In 2023, Hungary was in the mid-range of EU countries considering startup activity, as approximately 10 percent of the population was involved in early-stage entrepreneurial activity. Over 40 percent of Hungarian startups were aligned towards consumer-oriented services, while another 28 percent of businesses operated in the transforming sector.
