Warranty and indemnity insurance (W&I) covers financial losses arising from unintentional or unknown breaches of warranty inherent to mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Between 2009 and 2019, almost one third of W&I insurance notifications in Europe were tax related. Approximately 23 percent of the notifications were related to financial statement breaches, such as overstated profit or inventory. The most common reasons for insurance notifications varied in different European countries. In the United Kingdom (UK) the most common insurance notification was due to tax breach, while in Germany, it was related to financial statement breaches.
