Total container throughput in Singapore 2014-2023

The container throughput in Singapore amounted to approximately 39 million shipping containers, or Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEUs), in 2023. The harbor activity slightly increased compared to 2020 and reached an all-time high in 2023.   

Decreasing growth rate of the global container throughput

The global container throughput experienced some difficulties in 2020 due to a changing market and new requirements such as the obligation to use low-sulphur fuel. Many shipping companies were unsure if sufficient fuel would be available at any location and therefore tried to plan more carefully. However, the Singaporean port provided a transparent, consistent-in-policy and pro-business environment which resulted in the port being less affected than others. Singapore was able to reach the second highest liner shipping connectivity index with 112.77 points in the Asia-Pacific region.

The foundation for this development was laid by the Singaporean port operator PSA International Pte Ltd. Since 1913 (originally named Singapore Harbor Board), the company has been transforming Singapore’s port into one of the most powerful in the world. PSA International generated a revenue of about 4.7 billion Singapore dollars in 2021.
