In 2022, an estimated 18.5 million metric tons of plastics packaging waste were collected for treatment in Europe (EU27+3), up from 15.4 million metric tons in 2010. While the waste volume sent to landfills decreased by nearly 50 percent over the period in consideration, plastic packaging waste collected for recycling grew by 84 percent, reaching seven million tons.
