Value of public funds allocated for the NHS in Italy 2001-2024
Between 2001 and 2021, the value of public funds allocated for the National Health Service (in Italian, Servizio Sanitario Nazionale - SSN) in Italy increased considerably. In particular, between 2011 and 2005 the amount of funds increased rapidly, going from 71.3 billion euros to 93.2 billion euros. In the following years, this figure grew slowly but steadily. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the Italian government to invest more into the SSN. In 2021, the second year of the pandemic, then, the value of public funds allocated for the National Health Service peaked at 121.4 billion euros. This value was expected to grow in the following years.
