In 2022, Singapore's world-renowned Changi Airport recorded 32.2 million visitors. This marked a significant increase from only approximately three million visitors in the previous year, indicating a recovery after being severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and global travel restrictions.

Changi Airport as an attraction

Established in 1981, Changi Airport is now one of the largest transportation hubs in Asia and one of the busiest in terms of passenger traffic. The airport was the world’s ninth busiest airport for international traffic, handling 7,000 flights weekly. It has also attained the award for the best airport in the world for seven consecutive years. With dozens of features such as an indoor waterfall, butterfly gardens and restaurants across four terminals, Changi Airport is a destination as much as it is an attraction for locals and travelers.

Movements in Changi Airport

Passenger traffic growth was registered across all regions, with Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia and South Asia as key contributors. Singapore’s largest feeder market for international visitors is China. To accommodate this continuous growth in passenger traffic, the airport’s fifth terminal is expected to be ready by the 2030s, handling almost 50 million passenger movements per annum. Due to the adverse impact of COVID-19, the airport has incorporated new and enhanced technologies. One such example is the proximity sensors to eliminate the need for travellers to touch electronic screens when they check in or drop off their bags – the first of its kind in any airport.
