In 2020, approximately 20 thousand hectares of peatland were burnt because of wildfire in Indonesia. One of the worst-affected regions in Indonesia is Riau. Peatland areas help minimize the risk of flooding and drought and prevent seawater intrusion. However, due to the wildfire season, Indonesia's peatland areas are decreasing and hence, maximizing the risk of flooding.
