It was forecast that, in 2026, Latin America would be home to nearly 131 million subscribers of video-on-demand (VOD) services, out of which around 48.38 million (or 37 percent) would subscribe to Netflix. Disney+ ranked second with about 32.51 million subscribers or roughly 25 percent of the market. Amazon Prime Video followed with a share of almost 15 percent, which translates into 19.36 million subscribers.
Streaming beyond Netflix
By the end of 2020, Latin America was home to 53 million subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) subscribers. This number was projected to increase by about 30 percent and surpass 68.8 million by 2022. Current market leader Netflix is facing growing competition from new services, and the streaming landscape became even more crowded in 2020 after the launch of Disney+ in Latin America. Between 2021 and 2026, Netflix’s subscriber base in the region is forecast to grow by over 170 percent. The number of Disney+’s subscribers was expected to climb by more than 260 percent during the same period.
SVOD markets in Latin America
Despite being by far the largest country in Latin America both by area and by population, Brazil does not lead the SVOD industry in the region in every aspect. In 2019, Mexico held the highest SVOD penetration rate among Latin American countries, at just above 40 percent. Meanwhile, Argentina had the largest number of video streaming platforms in the region, with 48 services available as of March 2021.
