In 2021, the retail value of the organic packaged food and beverages market in Japan amounted to around 603 million U.S. dollars. The market size was forecast to reach almost 613 million dollars in 2025, carried by the growth of packaged food sales.

Organic farming

Organic foods in Japan are labeled with the Organic Japanese Agricultural Standard (Organic JAS) logo or certifications of a comparable system recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Within the domestic farming industry, organic farmland remained a rarity but the area passing the certification requirements showed an upward trend in recent years. Upland fields were the most common types of organic farmland, which is used for vegetable crops and fruit trees.

Organic food

The Japanese agriculture sector produces a variety of certified fresh foods including vegetables, fruits, livestock products, and industrial crops, but the consumer market is dominated by processed foods. While fresh produces are also distributed through farmers’ markets and local retailers, they are mostly processed into foods with a prolonged shelf-life like beverages, boiled vegetables, and processed meat products.
