During the surveyed time period between August 2016 and February 2017, approximately fourteen percent of the male respondents stated that they smoke bidi's, as opposed to a female share of just over one percent. The share of male cigarette smokers was considerable low, at just over seven percent.
In order to discourage smoking, the Central Government of the south Asian nation had proposed to increase tax on tobacco products in its fiscal year 2020 Union Budget.
