Recently, a buruli ulcer epidemic could be seen in Victoria, Australia. So far, Australia is the only developed country in the world with an outbreak. Buruli ulcers develop when a bacteria known as Mycobacterium ulcerans manages to nest in the skin. The ulcer itself is a lump of skin tissue that has either been liquefied by the bacteria or rotted away and leaves deep abscess in the skin. It is supposed that the disease is transmitted from possums and other animals to humans via mosquito bites.
