Renewable energy capacity in Luxembourg 2008-2023
In 2023, the renewable energy capacity in Luxembourg amounted to 782 megawatts. Over the last decade, renewable capacity increased in the country. Luxembourg’s sustainable transition was especially seen in the consumption of energy from renewable sources in Luxembourg. Indeed, nine percent of the energy consumed in Luxembourg was derived from renewable sources in 2018.
Luxembourg’s renewable capacity comes mostly from one source
In Luxembourg, the highest renewable energy capacity was derived from hydropower. In 2021, the installed hydropower capacity in Luxembourg equaled to 1.3 gigawatts. To a much lesser extent, some of Luxembourg’s renewable energy capacity also derived from photovoltaic and wind power. In 2019, the installed solar photovoltaic capacity amounted to 141 megawatts and the installed wind capacity to 157 megawatts in 2021.
Luxembourg ‘s renewable sector in the future
Luxembourg was one of the European Union countries with the lowest penetration rate of renewable energy. In 2018, the share of energy derived from renewable sources in Luxembourg reached over 9 percent. However, in the European-Union’s transition to a more sustainable energy sector, Luxembourg aims at increasing its consumption of renewables to 11 percent.
