Figures are 'real lengths'. According to the source, real length of roads refers to the length of roads minus duplicate length (duplicate sections), length not in service (sections for which no notification of commencement of service has been provided) and water length (sections on the sea, rivers, lakes or marshes where ferrying services are available).
Due to the Great East Japan Earthquake, figures for 2011 and 2012 partly include data for city, town and village roads as of April 1, 2012 and before.
Data prior to 2022 come from previous reports.
