In Dutch supermarkets, which make up approximately 40 percent of all payment transactions in the country, 80 percent of all payments were done by debit card. In the second quarter of 2018, the share of NFC payments of all debit card payments was approximately 48 percent. NFC payments were introduced in the Netherlands in 2014. It mainly involves contactless payments made at points of sales, with either a debit card, a mobile phone or payments via QR codes.
