Geothermal power is the main source of energy in Iceland, accounting for over half of total primary energy consumption in the country. Iceland's location between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates means it is volcanically and geologically active, lending itself perfectly to geothermal energy production. In 2020, geothermal energy use amounted to 173.2 petajoules, compared with a total of 246.1 petajoules.
