Distribution of bar visits in Belgium 2017, by type of bar

The statistic displays the results of a survey concerning the distribution of bar visits in Belgium in 2017, by type of bar. In the survey, participants were asked what type of bar or cafe they frequented. As of 2017, the share of bar visits for so-called "brown cafes" far exceeded that of the other establishments mentioned in the survey. More than half of the roughly 900 respondents visited "brown cafes", whereas just one percent of respondents indicated that they visited dance clubs, and 20 percent visited other types of bars.

A brown cafe (bruin cafe) is a typical Belgian and Dutch establishment similar to a pub, generally with a cozy, traditional style interior. Brown cafes serve a variety of alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages, from local beer, to fresh mint tea, and are often open from the afternoon to early hours of the morning.
