Main travel destinations for Swedish outbound travelers 2020, by number of trips

Spain was the most popular travel destination among Swedish international tourists in 2020. In total, residents from the Nordic country took nearly 300 thousand trips to the Spanish territory that year. Sweden's southern neighbor, Denmark, was the second most visited country by Swedish travelers. The only non-European country on the top ten that year was Thailand.

International tourism

While Norway is the ninth most visited country among Swedes, Norway is the leading inbound travel market for Sweden. Norwegian tourists made approximately 3.5 million overnight stays in 2018, while a little over three million overnight stays came from German travelers. Visitors from Denmark spent the third-most nights in Sweden, amounting to around 1.3 million overnight stays in the same year.

Domestic tourism

Domestic tourism was more important, as the overnight stays registered in Sweden that came from international tourists accounted for 17.3 million out of 65 million overnight stays overall. With the current coronavirus crisis, it seems that Swedes will start vacationing even more at home. When asked about which countries they would visit over the next six months, Sweden was the most stated answer among the respondents, followed by Spain.
