The incidence of homelessness and poverty in households registered a decrease between 2006 and 2020. In 2017, it was estimated that 5.2 percent of households were living below the poverty line in Uruguay, the lowest share of the analyzed period. In 2023, the value was 7 percent, which was an increase of 0.1 percent points compared to the previous year.

To determine if a household lives in situation of poverty, the National Institute of Statistics of Uruguay, takes into account the value of the basic food and non-food basket, and the number of household members.
