In 2022, the North of Italy generated approximately 13.8 million tons of municipal waste. This area accounted for almost half of the total municipal waste production of the country. In the South, the quantity of waste produced amounted to roughly nine million tons, while the Center of Italy produced the smallest volume of municipal waste at 6.2 million tons. Compared to 2016, the municipal waste generation decreased in the whole country.
