Consumption of nuclear power in the European Union amounted to seven exajoules in 2019. Between 2025 and 2050, nuclear consumption is forecast to decline in all scenarios and amount to three exajoules in 2050. The Net Zero scenario and the accelerated scenario showed the same figures according to the 2023 outlook, forecasting a steady decline between 2025 and 2040.

According to the source, the Accelerated and Net Zero scenarios explore how different elements of the energy system might change in order to achieve a substantial reduction in carbon emissions. They are based on the assumption that more ambitious climate policies will lead to a pronounced and sustained fall in CO2-equivalent emissions. Emissions reductions in the Net Zero scenario are aided by changes in societal behavior and preferences which further support gains in energy efficiency and the adoption of low-carbon energy sources.
The New Momentum scenario is designed to illustrate the current trajectory of the global energy system. It encompasses both the recent increase in global ambition for decarbonization and the likelihood that those aims and ambitions will be achieved, and on the manner and speed of progress seen over the recent past.
