Ranking of asset managers in the Netherlands 2021, by worldwide AUM
Based on the value of worldwide assets under management (AUM) in 2021, APG tops the ranking of the ten largest asset managers headquartered in the Netherlands. The company, a service provider to (pension) funds and employers in sectors such as education, government and medicine, had around 636 billion euros worth of assets. Due to the Dutch pension system, where it is mandatory to be part of a pension fund, pension funds in the Netherlands have the highest AUM of financial institutions in the country and are therefore an important client of asset managers.
Online brokers
One particular type of asset management that is absent from this ranking is online brokers, investment companies that only operate online. Several of these exist in the Netherlands, such as DEGIRO, which aims to make stock exchange information accessible via desktop, tablets and smartphones which can then be traded on their platform for a fee.
Asset management in the Benelux region
Dutch asset managers dominate the asset management industry in the Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg (Benelux) region, as seven of the top ten asset managers in the region are from the Netherlands. The largest asset management firm in the region that is not from the Netherlands, is the Belgian KBC Asset Management, ranked fifth in terms of total assets.Online brokers
