This statistic shows the percentage of adults in the U.S. with depression from 2013 to 2016, by age. During this period, around eight percent of those aged 60 years and older had depression, compared to 7.7 percent of those aged 20 to 39 years.

Measured using the score from the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), a nine item
depression-screening instrument that asks about the frequency of symptoms of depression
in the past 2 weeks. Response categories of “not at all,” “several days,” “more than half the
days,” and “nearly every day” are given a score of 0 to 3. Summary scores ranged from 0 to 27.
Depression was defined using a score of 10 or higher, a well-validated cut point used in primary
care settings.
