As of 2022, there were over 32,000 speed pedelecs on the road in the Netherlands, around 4,000 units more than in 2021. The number of speed pedelecs on Dutch roads grew by 30 percent in 2021 and a further 15 percent in 2022.

* Speed pedelec is a faster electric bicycle with a maximum speed of 45 km/h. In the Netherlands, a helmet, registration and insurance are mandatory for these kind of bicycles. Furthermore, owners of a speed pedelec are obliged to follow the same traffic rules as that of mopeds.
