The number of Bancomat cards in circulation in Italy remained relatively unchanged over the years. This according to the company behind this local card scheme, Bancomat S.p.A. Bancomat originally refers to an interbank system that allows for cash withdrawals - i.e., it started out as an ATM brand - but grew to include the PagoBancomat brand, which offers contactless payments on cards. In its reporting, Bancomat S.p.A. does not distinguish between the two names - saying that the total number of cards in circulation for either ATMs or contactless payments was 34 million as of December 31, 2021. Bancomat is an in-market local alternative to Mastercard and Visa and is not found anywhere else in Europe.
