The government funded oil company Petronas ranked first in the in number of petroleum stations in Malaysia in 2017. The company, which also constructed the Petronas towers, one of the landmarks in Kuala Lumpur, has been classified as one of the 500 largest companies on the world.

The oil company mainly produces in Sudan even though most western oil companies have withdrawn their investments from this country due to the difficult political situation and the Darfur conflict. This strategy resulted in an operating revenue of about 250 billion Malaysian ringgit as of 2018, of which the domestic market accounted for 62 billion ringgit .

The even larger oil company Shell , for example, ranked second with only 115 petroleum stations less than Petronas. However, Shell is more successful in the neighboring countries such as in Thailand and the Philippines.
