Passenger car stock in Germany 1960-2024

In 2023, around 48.76 million cars were registered in Germany, a small increase compared to the year before at 48.54 million. However, comparing to further back to 1960, numbers have exploded.

New car smell

The German automobile industry has long been one of the most successful and energetic globally, as well as a pillar of the German economy. Based on recent figures, German car sales generated around 506 billion euros. Among drivers, the largest number of registered passenger cars were Volkswagen (VW) vehicles, followed by Mercedes and Opel – all German brands looking back on a long history. The leading car models, meanwhile, were all from Volkswagen: Golf, Tiguan and T-Roc.

Winning the race

Globally, the Volkswagen group ranked second in 2021 with sales, making it one of the leading vehicle manufacturers worldwide. German cars were mainly exported to other European countries, though Asia was also a significant export region for the German automobile industry.
