Incidence of measles in Italy 2023, by age

In 2023, the incidence of measles cases among children under four years of age was 2.71 per million population. This age group recorded the greatest incidence of measles over the period considered. Furthermore, the second-highest incidence of measles was recorded among people aged 15 to 39 years old. 

Regional distribution of measles cases

In 2023, the number of measles cases nationwide amounted to 44. Campania and Lombardy reported the highest number of cases, having 14 and nine cases, respectively.

Measles vaccination

In 2023, Italy was the European country with the sixth-highest number of measles cases registered. In 2017, the law which made measles vaccination mandatory came into force in Italy. To all appearances, the law was effective, given that between 2015 and 2018 the measles vaccination coverage increased by 7.09 percent. The same can be said about the vaccination coverage for some other diseases regulated by this Law, such as rubella and parotitis.
