Property tenure distribution in the UK 1980-2022
In 2022, approximately 64 percent of all housing in the UK was owned and occupied. This share increased slightly between 2017 and 2021 due to the low mortgage rates and growing consumer confidence. Nevertheless, the dramatic house price increase since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in combination with the low inventory of affordable housing has forced many prospective home buyers to place their plans to purchase a house on hold. In 2022, the share of households in a private rental home rose from 18.5 to 19.1.
