The original Oreo cookie, which consists of cream filling sandwiched between two chocolate cookies, was first produced and sold in 1912. Since then, there have been many varieties which include Golden Oreo, Double Stuff Oreo, and Oreo Thins to name a few. In 2017, Double Stuff Oreo was the second most popular variety of Oreo cookies in the United States, with sales of 268.2 million U.S. dollars.

The multinational food corporation, Mondelez International controls nearly 40 percent of the U.S. cookie market and is the leading cookie vendor in the United States as of 2019. Mondelez International also manufactures the cookie brands Belvita, Nutter Butter, and Nilla Wafers. Biscuit sales make up the largest share of the Mondelez International’s net revenue, at 43.1 percent in 2018.
