Italy: annual installed capacity of PV systems 2006-2017
In Italy, 2011 was the best year for photovoltaics (PV) in terms of new installed capacity, since that 9,536 megawatts were set up. Thereafter, the level of annual installed capacity gradually decreased reaching 400 megawatts in 2017.

On the other hand, the number of photovoltaic systems constantly increased from 2009 onwards, peaking at 774,014 plants in 2017. Photovoltaics were mainly used in the residential and in the tertiary sector , whereas they were less popular in the industry and in the agricultural fields.
Comparison to PV capacity in the EU and worldwide
In 2018, Germany – with 45,277 megawatts installed - was the EU country with the greatest connected and cumulated solar photovoltaic capacity . Italy came second in the ranking with a total installed capacity amounting to 20,107 megawatts. Nonetheless, Italy was the country with the greatest share of electricity consumption covered by solar PV power worldwide.
