In 2017, the population of Chile consumed 86.1 kilograms of bread, the highest amount per capita among a selected group of Latin American countries. Argentina followed, with the second largest consumption at just under 50 kilograms per person that same year.
Consumers in Chile
Purchased by a great majority of consumers in the country, bread is by far the most popular basic food item in Chile. After bread, potatoes and similar vegetables are the second most widely consumed starchy food, enjoyed by over half of the country's households. Additional commonly purchased grocery products include meat items, such as beef and poultry, as well as other ingredients like tomatoes and eggs.
Bread in Chile
The crispy marraqueta is one of the most widely eaten types of bread in Chile. This product is shaped into four separable rolls and made of only four ingredients: flour, water, salt, and yeast. Inexpensive to procure and produce, bread serves as a staple food for the inhabitants of Chile, but more heavily relied upon by those reporting moderate to severe food insecurity.
