From 2008 to 2017, the day-to-day per capita consumption of clean water had diminished in France from 151 liters to 150 liters per day and per person. This includes domestic clean water usages. Beside energy production, drinking water was the main use of the total water withdrawal in France in 2012.

According to a study from 2017, the share of French people drinking tap water has outreached the 60 percent since 2006 and represented 64 percent of the respondents in 2017, whereas the bottled water consumption has decreased to its lowest value in 2010 (42 percent) before reaching 51 percent again in 2017.

Regarding tap water, the majority of the French public opinion in 2018 considered the quality of the tap water in their region rather satisfactory . Furthermore, 90 percent of French respondents declared thinking that it would be useful to get information on the origin of their drinking water . In that same survey, French people also expressed a large interest in various information to water quality in general in the environment.
