Italy: projected wind power capacity installed 2017-2020
A study released at the end of 2017 reveals that the total installed capacity of wind plants was expected to steadily grow in Italy, reaching a peak by the end of 2020. However, the new installed capacity dropped between 2017 and 2018, declining by 34 percent. Considering that Italy has a great potential in terms of availability of this source, it may be assumed that some policy interventions are required in order to better exploit wind power.

The amount of gross energy produced from wind power increased over time. The level of production peaked in 2016, while it slightly decreased the following year. Moreover, forecasts show that the production of thermoelectric power from wind plants will remarkably grow until 2030.

In 2017, ERG Renew was the major supplier of wind energy in Italy, with an installed capacity of 1,133.6 megawatts. The company accounted for 12.4 percent of the total energy produced from wind plants nationwide. The second and the third main suppliers, Enel and Edison, represented 6.9 percent and 6.2 percent of the total production, respectively.
