Between 2008 and 2013, the number of job seekers had increased in Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, and particularly in La Réunion, where there were 114,702 in 2008, compared to 137,784 five years later. Between 2013 and 2020, the number of unemployed people had, on the other hand, decreased in the French overseas regions, with the exception of French Guiana, where the number increased from 30,497 to 36,724 between 2013 and 2019.

"Unemployed persons for the purposes of the population census are persons (aged 15 or over) who declared themselves to be unemployed (either registered or not with Pôle Emploi) unless they have also explicitly declared that they were not looking for work ; and on the other hand the persons (of 15 or more years old) who declared themselves spontaneously neither in employment, nor unemployed, but who nevertheless declared to look for an employment."
