As of March 2023, Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings was the leading chemical company in Japan in terms of total assets, which amounted to approximately 5.8 trillion Japanese yen. Since other industries such as the transportation machinery industry and the automotive industry are dependent on industrial raw materials provided by the chemical industry, it is one of the most important and largest manufacturing industries in Japan.

Next to being the largest chemical company in Japan, Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings also ranked among the global leading chemical companies in terms of revenue in recent years. The Tokyo-based company was established in 2005 and has several subsidiaries. Its product range is highly diversified and covers the segments of performance products, industrial materials, and health care. Main products include chemicals, polymers, high-performance chemicals, film and sheets, electronics, fibers, textiles, as well as pharmaceutical products.

In a broader definition, it includes plastic and rubber products. The sales value of the Japanese chemical industry increased in recent years, indicating the continuous expansion of the industry.
Plastic materials were the most exported chemical products, while medical products had the largest import value. Due to the continued demand for pharmaceutical products from the aging population, Japan was expected to remain one of the most important markets for foreign pharmaceutical companies.
