With an estimated production volume of over 3.6 million metric tons, the state of Madhya Pradesh was the largest producer of spices across India in 2024. Rajasthan and Gujarat were the other major producers that year. The country’s total spice production was estimated to be around 12 million metric tons that same year.
Which spice dominates the land of spices?
India is aptly named the land of spices, with it’s rich spice heritage and production dominance. In addition to being the leading producer and exporter of spices in the world, the country has the most prominent domestic spice market in the world. In rural India, dry chilies accounted for 19 percent of the market share. On the other hand, for the same year in the urban market, this position was held by ginger and garlic. The ginger, garlic, and chilies occupied the highest positions in the estimated production volume of spices in India in 2022.
The international demand for Indian spices
The spices from India are one of the most sought-after commodities all over the world. Owing to their immunity-boosting properties, the demand for Indian spices has risen even more since the outbreak of COVID-19. In the financial year 2022, India exported spices worth over 290 billion Indian rupees. India is an exporter to over 180 countries. In the financial year 2019, the United States, Bangladesh, and the United Arab Emirates accounted for more than half of the spices exported, in terms of value.
