All data were self-reported. Participants who responded “yes” to “Has a doctor or other health professional ever told you that you had a stroke?” were defined as having had a stroke.
In separate questions, respondents were asked if they had ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that they had: hypertension (or high blood pressure), coronary heart disease, angina (or angina pectoris), heart attack (or myocardial infarction), any other heart condition or disease not already mentioned, or a stroke.
