In 2023, there were 20,079 pharmacies in Italy. Lombardy was the region with the largest number of pharmacies. Lazio and Campania followed. However, the latter two were among the regions with greatest number of inhabitants per pharmacy.
Online Sales
In 2017, Piedmont, Lombardy and Campania were the regions where most of the pharmacies authorized to sell products online were located. The revenue generated by Italian pharmacies through online sales constantly increased between 2013 and 2017, when it reached 96 million euros.

In recent years, pharmacies in Italy not only extended the channels through which they sell their products, but also widened their range of services provided. In the past, pharmacies were just drug stores. Currently, many Italian pharmacies provide the possibility to take diagnostic tests and to book health appointments.
