Municipalities with a population of over 50,000 inhabitants had the highest percentage of households covered with FTTH internet in rural areas of Spain as of June 2022, with roughly 86 percent of coverage. In the case of municipalities with a population fewer than 100 inhabitants the percentage was around 31 percent.

Pure fiber optic networks are composed entirely of fiber optic cables, so they are also referred to as fiber networks to the home (Fiber To The Home, FTTH). The type of fiber network used by practically all operators in Spain is the GPON networks (Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network in English, or Passive Optical Network with Gigabit Capacity in Spanish).
