Over the period from 2008 to 2017, the sales value of dietary supplements in Italy has more than doubled. It increased from 1.3 million euros in 2008 to 2.7 billion euros as of March 2017, when 198 million packs of dietary supplements were sold in the country.
What are dietary supplements for
Half of the consumed dietary supplements are taken to restore the energy and muscle tone, while 31 percent of consumers used them against gastrointestinal disorders. Another 23 percent took them for cardiovascular prevention and osteoporosis. Lastly, 16 percent of dietary supplements users purchased them to restore the body’s defenses.
Other uses
The list of common uses could continue. For instance, data related to the use of dietary supplements among U.S. adults in 2018 showed that 21 percent of users between 18 and 34 years used to take them to lose or not gain weight, while 23 percent of adults between 35-54 years used them to strengthen their skin, hair and nails.
