Hotel bedroom occupancy rates in Romania 2012-2023
Romanian hotels saw occupancy rates fall during 2020 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Net bedroom occupancy rates declined by more than a third, to just 27 percent. In previous years, occupancy rates remained above 40 percent. When it comes to hotel bed-places, the occupancy rate in Romania peaked in 2019 at 39.72 percent. However in 2022 the occupancy was 32.53 percent and in 2023 it was 29.25 percent.
COVID-19 impact on the hospitality industry
Since the coronavirus outbreak in 2020, the hospitality industry in Romania has lost nearly ten thousand employees. Despite the importance and contribution of the hospitality industry to a country’s economy, people working in hotels and restaurants in Romania had the lowest average net earnings in December 2020. Moreover, the average net monthly salary in the Romanian hospitality industry only variated between 1,200 and 1,800 Romanian lei since 2016.
Travel expenditure
Because of travel restrictions imposed in 2020 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Romanians spent a total of 2.6 billion euros when travelling abroad. Compared to the amount of money spent abroad in 2019, this represented a decrease of approximately 50 percent. However, the average expenditure of Romanian tourists per holiday was not affected by the coronavirus pandemic, registering higher or similar values in 2020 compared to 2019.
