Average cost of medical prescriptions in pharmacies in Spain 2010-2021
In 2021, the average cost of medical prescriptions funded by the National Health System in pharmacies in Spain amounted to approximately 11.5 euros, up from an average price of 11.3 euros reported a year earlier. The average expenditure per medical prescription delivered through pharmacies in Spain reached its lowest value in 2012 and 2013, when the cost of a medical prescription added up to 10.6 euros.
Pharmacies in Spain
Known by the name of “farmacias”, pharmacies in Spain are recognized by a green cross lighted sign. As of 2022, there were more than 22,200 of these establishments registered in the European country. This represents a gradual increase in recent years, and varies from region to region, with Andalusia and Catalonia, the most populated Spanish autonomous communities, having the highest number of pharmacies, and Navarre having the highest pharmacies’ density.
Most sold medications
As of 2022, the therapeutic group with the highest volume share of medication units sold in Spain was that of pharmaceuticals designed for the nervous system, used to treat conditions such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. This category alone accounts for nearly 30 percent of the total. That year, the average price of these medications amounted to 6.27 euros. In comparison, the price of antineoplastic and immunomodulating agents reached 49.1 euros per unit.
