Average price of bicycles sold in Spain 2019, by type

Electric bicycles were the most expensive type of bicycle Spanish cyclists could purchase, at an average price of almost 2.2 thousand euros in 2019. Road bikes ranked as the second most costly type of bike during the same year, with average prices amounting to almost 1.8 thousand euros. In comparison to 2017, e-bikes experienced the greatest sales growth during 2018 in the Mediterranean country, recording almost 59 percent more sales than the previous year. This trend seems to be on par with the rest of Europe, which saw the number of electric bikes in their streets increase significantly in the last decade.

E-commerce: key to bicycle sales in Spain

Spanish sales of bicycles maintained during the last years at a steady annual volume of over one million units. As reflected by the latest reports, most of the bicycle sales were carried out in specialized stores, with over 40 percent of the sales volume during 2018. It is also worth mentioning the important role of e-commerce in the industry, which accounted for 24 percent of the total sales during the same year in Spain, with other sale establishments such as multi-sport chains recording a similar share.

Greater employment, lesser production

The number of bicycles manufactured in Spain saw its numbers dwindle over the past years, with figures amounting to 225 thousand units produced in 2019 down from a peak of 404 thousand in 2011. These figures do not seem to affect the employment in this sector, with an increasing number of professionals in this industry that rose from eight hundred in 2010 to approximately 1.5 thousand in 2018.
