In 2015, more than 200 kilotons of geothermal energy equivalent were consumed for the first time in France. In this manner, it can be assumed that the consumption of geothermal energy (for the production of heat) had steadily increased since 2006. In 2019 more than 300 kilotons of geothermal energy equivalent were consumed.

The Observation and Statistics Service (SOeS) of the Ministry of Environment, Energy and the Sea (MEEM) defines the geothermics for thermal use as follows:" use of terrestrial geothermal energy to produce directly heat ( without the intermediary of heat pumps). The heating energy produced by means of heat pumps is accounted for in a specific sector. "
