As of June 2023, Telstra held a 43 percent share of the mobile handset services retail market in Australia. Telstra has maintained its dominance in the retail mobile phone services market in Australia, with its biggest competitor being Optus.

Telstra is the largest Australian telecommunications company by market share. Originally a state-owned enterprise, it is now a fully privatized company and one of the biggest brands in the country. The brand value of Telstra reached over 13 billion U.S. dollars in 2023. In the 2023 fiscal year, Telstra reported a revenue of around 22.7 billion Australian dollars, a value far greater than its competitors. 

5G roll-out

The introduction of 5G mobile communications technology will undoubtedly create more opportunities for Australians to stay connected. Over half of Australians surveyed stated they would consider using 5G as an alternative to the National Broadband Network. Telstra has led the charge in implementing a 5G network across Australia. With 5G continually being rolled-out across the nation, mobile internet will likely gain a larger share of the market.
