Sugarcane production
India is the world's largest consumer and the second-largest producer of sugarcane, after Brazil. As a commercial crop and its ease of cultivation, the crop is highly desired by farmers. While most of the cultivated sugarcane is used for sugar extraction, it is also a raw material for alcohol production. Due to its economic benefits, globally the crop has had a constant increase in its production.
Sugarcane regions in India
Maharashtra, the western Indian state was the leading producer of sugarcane. The western part of the state forms the core of sugarcane production in the country along the Ganges and Yamuna. With over 192 established sugar mills, the state was the leading mill sugar producer.
