Number of individuals with rare diseases in Spain 2023
As of 2023, the most common rare disease in Spain was the toxic oil syndrome. Approximately 15,000 individuals suffered from this syndrome in the European country. The toxic oil syndrome is an extremely rare disease that has been reported only in Spain, and is linked to an outbreak thought to be caused by the consumption of contaminated rapeseed oil. Other common rare diseases in the country are retinitis pigmentosa, Tarlov's cyst, and dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa.
