In 2021, Europeans planned to spend an average of 1.8 weeks on their summer vacation. The same study showed that the majority of Europeans had summer plans in 2021, whether it involved going abroad or staying in the country.
The French: European champions of summer holidays
According to the source French people had the longest average summer holiday duration in 2021. The French spent an average two weeks on summer vacation compared to a week and half for British tourists, who recorded the shortest average summer holiday duration among the European countries surveyed. Summer breaks seem to be important in Europe, a region where primary school students have between six and 13 weeks of summer school holidays. With about nine weeks of summer school holidays, the French like to spend a fair amount. Spending in France was above the average budget for summer holiday travel in Europe in 2021.
Europeans avoid travelling abroad
Several studies have pointed out that Europeans enjoy travelling in their own country or within Europe during summertime. In 2017, a survey from Eurostat showed that 91 percent and 87 percent of holiday trips in Spain and France were domestic. However, it can also be said that Europeans like to discover the countries of their closest neighbors. In 2017, 15 percent of German tourists were considering going to Spain for the summer holidays , while 11 percent of Spaniards planned to spend their holidays in Italy.
